Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
