An individual who contaminated treats with tranquilliser and distributed them to children at a summer camp in Leicestershire has confessed to sexual crimes against two children who were nine and 10.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight minors and one adult fell ill at the facility in mid-summer.

The 76-year-old, from that region, confessed to a series of 17 offences when he appeared at the courthouse on Friday.

Yet, he disputed one particular crime he was charged with, which was involving a nine-year-old child.

The defendant was remanded in custody before a additional proceeding on November 28th.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described the defendant's actions to the court.

She stated his those affected were under-privileged children who were attending a summer program which he ran.

The man engaged in a "treat game" with the minors, the prosecutor stated, in which he would enter the sleeping quarters when they were getting ready for bed and ask them to consume candy "rapidly".

She stated to the judge the man had engaged in this activity with the boys "repeatedly", and children had previously become sick the following morning.

She said the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overstimulated by activities", until his stepchild had concerns in summer 2025.

The prosecutor continued: "This year his stepson had concerns about the situation, for good reason.

"They chose" to investigate in the individual's items."

The prosecutor explained objects including infant oil, ointment and medical needles were located, and his family member contacted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She said the defendant proceeded to play the "candy game" with six children that time - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the next day.

"Law enforcement" had not responded by that time," she stated further.

The oversight body, the investigative body, earlier informed that it was examining the police response of the incident.

The prosecutor stated the children were unable to walk properly due to their sickness, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement once more.

She explained the man then engaged in the "treat game" in a area of five children.
