Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in September and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information emerged.

This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is located around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will experience a detention review on the next day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
